Robert Parr, Technical DIrector
Gulf Coast Youth Soccer Club (GCYSC) is pleased to announce the hiring of Robert Parr as our club's first professional Technical Director of all soccer programs within the club! This past February, the GCYSC Board appointed a committee to conduct a national search for a full-time professional Technical Director. Our goal was to find a professional coach with:
- a strong background in the game and a "player development first" mentality
- a strong working knowledge of club soccer and youth development
- significant experience as a coaching educator
With this criteria in mind, we are extremely excited to have Robert join our club to oversee player and coaching development and lead us into a new phase of club development and growth.
Coach Parr joins us from the Arkansas State Soccer Association (ASSA), where he has served as Director of Coaching since January 2009. He holds a USSF "A" license, NSCAA Premier Diploma, and a USSF National Youth Coaching License. He currently serves as a consultant for NSCAA's Club Standards Project of which GCYSC is now a member, and is an Associate Instructor for US Youth Soccer and the NSCAA. His background includes playing and coaching at the collegiate level, coaching at the semi-professional level and serving as director of coaching at a major club in Austin, Texas. Robert's bio is posted on the GCYSC coaching staff page.
The next few months will be a transitional period for Robert and the club. Robert currently resides in Sherwood, AR and will need some time to wrap up his current work assignments, sell his home, and find a home here. Being a DOC for a US Youth Soccer State Association is an important role that touches every player and coach in that state, and we are supporting his request to finish his obligations with ASSA and leave them in good hands. In the interim, Daryl Miller will remain Director of Coaching to assist Robert through the fall transition period. Gulf Coast has also reorganized our board to include Directors for Micro Soccer (U6), Academy Program, Recreational and Select Programs to assist Robert with management and organization of these programs, see Board of Directors webpage.
By bringing Coach Parr to GCYSC, we are taking the next step in our efforts to establish our club as a model that will be followed by others around the country in the years ahead. Over the next 12 months, you will see us take a number of other important steps along this path, including:
- regular in-house training and new online practice planning tools for all our coaches
- more frequent communication with players and parents via newsletters, web blogs, and in-person meetings
- the implementation of a player-focused curriculum that matches the developmental needs of our players at all levels
- structural improvements to our recreational and academy programming to ensure that we are emphasizing player development in a fun and age-appropriate manner
In the longer term, we will be working to make GCYSC much more than "just a place to play soccer". We want the club to become an organization that is valued highly throughout the local community, even by our neighbors and co-workers who don't play or coach soccer themselves. We also want to reach more young players than ever before and bring them to GCYSC so they can experience the "beautiful game" with us. To achieve this goal, we will need your help and ongoing support to provide our current and future generations with the best-possible place in which to learn, grow, and compete as soccer players.
Please join us in welcoming Robert, his wife Michelle, and young son Christopher to the GCYSC family! Creating a Model Youth Soccer Club that we can all be proud of requires a lot of time and effort by all professional and volunteer staff. We welcome your feedback, input, and support as we move forward to the future as a larger and stronger club.
