The Skills Club provides recreational players an affordable opportunity to receive weekly training from the professional staff to complement their regularly scheduled team practices and games. This year we will offer the Skills Club on Friday evening so players can attend without missing team practices.

Why Join the Skills Club? We all know that kids have more fun playing soccer when they are able to dribble through defenders, make timely passes, and take exciting shots. Unlike other sports where players use their hands, soccer players' dependence on their feet requires that they learn to control and manipulate the ball at a very young age (see box below). The Skills Club is a program developed by Technical Director Robert Parr to improve these fundamental skills for players ages 6-12 so they can have more success and have more fun on the field. The Skills Club runs 6-weeks in the spring season and 8-weeks in the fall.

US Soccer Stages of Player Development

Initial Stage (5-7 years old)

  • The focus is on fun games with and without the ball, basic motor skills, technical training focuses on introductory dribbling, stopping/starting with the ball and shooting.

Basic Stage  (8-11 years old)

  • Ideal age to learn soccer-specific techniques and skills, 1st touch, passing, moves, change of direction, 1v1, 2v1 attacking and defending, and combination play.

Intermediate Stage (12-13 years old)

  • With proper training at younger ages, players at this stage are working to perfect and speed up their technical skill while training focus shifts to the tactics of how to play the game.

"Without technique, there are no tactics!"

—Karl-Heinz Heddergott, former US Soccer Director of Coaching
